Equaldex: LGBTQ+ Rights & Equality Index

Equaldex offers free non-commercial APIs so researchers, journalists, educators, and developers can access LGBTQ+ rights data.

Guidelines

• The API is currently in beta: Please keep this in mind when using it. If you're planning to use Equaldex for a larger project, please reach out so we can discuss it.
• LGBTQ+ rights have many nuances: These complexities don't always fit perfectly into a structured database. Equaldex provides information in a structured format, but relevant context should always be included. For example, homosexuality may be legal in a country while LGBTQ+ people are still prosecuted in certain contexts or regions. Editors often provide this context in the description field.
• Equaldex is a community-built knowledge base: While we aim to provide accurate and up-to-date information, some information may be outdated or incorrect and not yet fixed, or a new law may not yet be reflected on Equaldex. Please keep this in mind when displaying Equaldex data.

API Policies

• 🏷️ Attribution is required: Content must include a link to the corresponding Equaldex region page, whose URL is included in the API response. Attribution must be visible, close to the content, and clearly identify Equaldex as the data source.
• 🏎️ Rate limiting: Please be mindful of request volume by spacing out requests and using cached responses when possible.
• 💾 Cache responses: If you display Equaldex content when loading a page or app, cache the API responses to prevent excessive requests.
• 📦 Refresh cached data within 60 days: If your website, app, or service stores Equaldex data for ongoing use, you must refresh it at least every 60 days because the data is frequently updated. This requirement does not apply to static publications, such as blog posts, reports, PDFs, or one-time visualizations, provided they clearly state when the data was retrieved and include the required attribution.
• 💰 Restrictions on paid use: You may not sell Equaldex data, charge users to access it, or display it in a paid app or subscription-based website. You may display Equaldex data on free websites and apps, including those supported by advertising. If your product combines free and paid features, or you’re unsure whether your use is permitted, please contact Equaldex.
• 📋 Do not replicate the Equaldex service: You may not use Equaldex's API to recreate a similar service.
